» T S Krishna Murthy, Vice Chairman


Mr. T. S. Krishna Murthy was appointed as the Election Commissioner on 30th   January 2000 after his long stint of more than 36 years in civil service. He is the first officerfrom the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) to become Secretary to the Government of India (1997-2000) and later the Election Commissioner (2000-2004) and later as the Chief Election Commission of India from February 2004 to May 2005.

He graduated with distinction in History, Economics and Political Science from St. Joseph’s college, Bangalore (University of Mysore); studied post-graduation in Economics from the MS University, Baroda and Law from the University of Madras. He did M.Sc., (Fiscal Studies) from the University of Bath, U.K.

He commenced his career as a Probationary officer in the Bank of India Limited in 1961.  He joined the Indian Revenue Service in 1963 through the combined Civil Services Examination.  After having worked in various capacities in the Income Tax Department, he worked as Commissioner of Income Tax, Chennai, Chief Commissioner of Income Tax, Bombay and Director General of Income Tax (Administration) New Delhi.

Mr. Krishna Murthy has worked as Member Secretary, Shipping Development Fund Committee (1975-1978) and General Manager (Finance and Commercial) Hindustan Shipyard Limited, Visakhapatnam (1979-1982) on deputation.  He was also in charge of Income Tax officers’ Training at the National Academy of Direct Taxes (1982-1986). He has also served as Joint Secretary (Tax Policy), Ministry of Finance, Joint Secretary (Foreign Tax Division), Ministry of Finance and Additional Secretary (Expenditure), Ministry of Finance. Mr. Krishna Murthy was elevated as Secretary to the Government of India, Department of Company Affairs in January, 1997 to deal with issues under the Companies Act, 1956, Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Act and other allied subjects

He was the first Chairman of Investor Protection and Education Fund set up specifically to take care of the interests of India’s Corporate Investors. Mr. Krishna Murthy has authored  a book on democracy  ‘ The Miracle of Democracy: India’s amazing journey” (Harper Collins India) which was released by Mr. Justice M.N.Venkatachaliah, Former  Chief Justice  of Supreme Court of India in August, 2008 with his Foreword.

Mr. Krishna Murthy is now on the Board of several Non Governmental Organisations and some corporates.
